Words of the Middle East and North Africa
Language Challenge
Although there are hundreds of spoken languages throughout the Middle East and North Africa, the four most common regional (i.e. non-Colonial) languages are Arabic, Farsi/Persian, Turkish, and Hebrew. While English is widely considered to be the language of travel and tourism, making the effort to learn at least the simplest phrases goes a long way in establishing respect and authentic relationships with members of another culture—and this challenge gives you the chance to do just that:
Directions:
Select one of the four main regional languages* listed below, read about their history, and then learn the following words and phrases to recite on Canvas for your challenge:
Required Words:
-
Hello, Goodbye, Yes, No, Please, and Thank you
Plus:
One (1) of the following pairs:
-
“Good morning” and “good evening”
-
“How are you?” and “Good, and you?”
-
“What is this?” and “Where is that?”
-
“My name is -your name-” and “Nice to meet you”
Post a video or recording of you reciting these words/phrases on the “Language Challenge” discussion board and then complete the Post-Challenge survey.

*If you are a native speaker of any of these languages,
please challenge yourself and pick a different one

Notes on provided translators:
The linked dictionaries and translators were chosen for their accuracy and audio examples to best help you learn how to say the required words and phrases. You're not required to use them, however, if you'd rather learn your phrases via video tutorial or from a friend. They are merely here for your convenience.
