Films of the Middle East and North Africa
Cinema Challenge

The term "Middle Eastern Cinema" -- sometimes over-simplified to "Arab Cinema" -- refers to the collective film industries of Western Asia and part of North Africa. In the Maghreb lectures we discuss Hollywood's influence in North Africa, but regional cinema is SO much more than just being a neat place to film. Everything from writing, directing, filming, and production of films are all being done locally, so much so critics are declaring we've entered a Golden Age of Middle Eastern Cinema. This challenge is more than just taking a break to watch a movie, it's an exploration into how a whole region is redefining cinema, celebrating self-representation, and breaking cultural barriers.

Directions:

1. Find and watch a MENA film -- made in the Middle East and

North Africa, not just filmed there (See links below for ideas)

2. Post the title of your chosen movie, a single-sentence summary, a

link to its IMBD page, and a brief comment on whether or not you

would recommend this film to others on the "Movie Challenge"

    discussion board on Canvas

3. Complete a Post-Project Survey for this challenge, including a

    formal Movie Review Worksheet:
